FLESH, BLOOD AND GORE
Write me a song dear bard
And record this date.
For today history bears witness
To the abomination birthed in my country
An unholy sacrilege of broad daylight.
The government of the day
Has forsworn her oath and
Shut down the light of her youths.
Brave men, women blossoming in their prime
Where fed to the guns of tyranny.
Today the drums have refused to beat.
In its stead are sounds and moans of death.
The voice of the early morning cocks are drowned
By the wails of mama Chibuzor
Mama Somtoo too has joined.
The night has eaten their sons.
They went and never returned.
Their lives have been used as an offering
To appease the god of greed and ungodly politics.
They went and never returned.
Play me a dirge dear bard
To drown my sorrows
And to drown these voices in my head.
For what is a man enslaved in his own land
And ruled with a fist of iron
In the face of democracy.
The youths of my time have served as the oil
With which Nigeria has eaten her yam roast.
This is a rude awakening
For each one down, a thousand more are awakened.
Tomorrow when the day breaks,
If we lived to see it, then
I will tell my sons
That this historic day - 20.10.20 -
At Lekki toll gate, Lagos:
The nation's white was smeared red.
Our leaders gave the orders
The military saw to it
And peaceful protesters were reduced
To flesh, blood and gore.
